Hernando Claros

Hernando Claros is the technical director of Suncatcher Players. He holds a master’s degree in Lighting, Projections and Scenic Design from Michigan State University. Born in Cali, Colombia, he grew up in an artistic environment due to his parents’ heavy involvement in the arts. At the age of 6, he started his journey debuting as a member of a children’s folk group and studying theater, music theory, and Latin-American percussion. He trained as a ballet dancer throughout his primary and secondary school years before he became interested in lighting design. In Columbia, Hernando received a Classical Ballet Dancer degree from Incolballet, an undergraduate degree in Graphic Design, a graduate degree in Arts Management from Instituto Departamental de Bellas Artes. During his 30-year-career he toured throughout the Americas and Europe as a Lighting Designer and Technical Director with the Colombian Ballet Company, Ballet de Cali Company, and other ensembles. He has created over 190 lighting designs for the Colombian Ballet Company and more than 30 groups including puppets, dance, theater and opera. His work has been featured in 27 countries on 4 continents.

Since August 2018 he is a member of the Technical Director, Lighting, Scenic and Projection Design faculty for the theatre program at Lenoir–Rhyne University. He enjoys spending his spare time at home with his wife, little son, dog, and chicks, and cooking and crafting things with his wife. Hernando is so happy to be part of Suncatcher Players, and he is ready to share his experience with the players as well as learn from them.
